My former husband was Rev. Wayne W. Landgrebe, ALC (American Lutheran). I was very young back then in 1962-1964 and wonder if anyone remains that I would know. I'm remembering Jonelle Samshenko and Sammy (farmers north of town toward Minot, I believe). We lost touch over the years. Those were tough years with the Minuteman Missils being built, Vietnam War days and such ... not easy for an educated minister, and outsider, to step in. I'm reading DAKOTA by Kathleen Norris and realize we weren't alone in the problems we encountered. I'd love to hear from anyone remembering me ... Carita Thank you!

After viewing the web site for Max, it appears that Rick Seklecki is a great person to settle here. I have known Rick for several years and think that he is an outstanding citizen that always put others first. Congratulations on his marriage and bringing another resident into the community.

Re:Maze
Good Morning, I was just wondering what the hours, dates and cost were for the Maze that is just north of Max and if they were doing a haunted maze when it got closer to Halloween? Any info would be great so I could pass it on, Thanks!
Ashley: All the information you seek can be found on maxcornmaze.com. Thanks for the inquiry. Have fun!

We are relocating to North Dakota from South Dakota. My husband is going to work for Crude City Construction and we are looking for a place to rent until we sell our house in SD then we would like to buy again in ND. I am also wondering what the Sunnyslope Homemakers group is. The website for Max, ND is so very inviting and looks like a wonderful place to live and make new friends. Thanks so much.

It's great to have an Honor Roll. I am interested in William and George Bronesky. Are there still members of their family about in Max?

I really like the website; good information and beautiful pictures! I've been coming to Max since I was little to see my favorite aunt Ethel Boettcher. So, Max holds alot of fond memories for me.

Just recently came to Max to help move my aunt Ethel Boettcher to a care facility and eat at the Max Cafe (had the Max Special). My brother Rick's comments about the family are pertinent for me as well. My aunt has a prodigious memory for the family and got me interested in the genealogy of the family. Some of the names in family tree that may ring a bell are Meiser, House, Carvell, Kline and Kamps, to name a few. The farm just west of the core of town was owned by my ancestors and I played in fields out there when we would come to visit from Oregon. If you have any stories of these families, I would love to hear them. Something a genealogy often lacks are stories to give the tree a vibrancy and meaning. Thanks for the opportunity to share! Rod

Moving
My husband and I bought a house in Max and we will be moving in this week. I will be without my husband for two weeks and I need help moving in. I don\'t have a lot of stuff but I\'d like help with the larger items like the washer and dyer and furniture. It won\'t take more than a few people and I\'m sure no more than an hour. If you know of anyone who can help I would be appreciative. Thanks! :)

We are thinking of buying a house in Max from one of our relatives. We currently live in Fishers, IN. I would like to get to know more about the town. It looks like a great place to live and raise our family. If there are any job listings for the town available, that would be very helpful too. Thank you!

I am looking for older photos of the city of Max ranging from the 1920s to the 1980s. Any shot taken on the streets of Max will work great. It doesn't matter who is in it and you don't need to include the names of people who may be in the pictures if you do not wish to. I'm working on a little project documenting the changes that have gone on in the city. If you have anything you could send in an email it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I spent a little while in Max, ND while I was traveling through the Mid/North-west on a post-high school graduation road trip a few years ago. I just wanted to say that the people in the town were very polite, welcoming, and friendly, to the extent that I have not forgotten them all this while later. I hope to revisit your wonderful town again one day.

RE:
birth records
I have a friend who is trying to obtain his driver's license He was born in Max, North Dakota in 1940 at a farmhouse. He has been in the service and worked his whole life However, he let his license lapse for several years- and they are requiring a birth certificate, baptism record or a record of something from 1940-1951. He has been hitting dead ends. Any suggestions on where to look or who to contact? Thank you, Ruthann Frank

Good day, I hope you can assist me. I am a daughter of a family line named Doepke. Before Doepke was the family name of Carvell, and prior to this name was the name House. Now my mother told me that my Great Grandmother (Martha House Carvell) was the first lady to ever live in Max, North Dakota. Now where in I hope you can help me...do you have information on the early days of Max? Do you have records of the early settlers? My mother also mentioned the family name Meiser, but I do not know if this was before Carvell, or if it was on the maternal or paternal side. Anything you have would be a great help. I anxiously await your e-mail. I do not use sites like ancestry.com (too expensive). Thank you, Mary M. Frizzell Mothers maiden name was Doepke. Many Doepke\'s still live today thru out North Dakota. e-mail...mmarlys@comcast.net address...4425 E. Frederick Ave Spokane, Wa. 99217

Hello,
My Grandfather emigrated from Germany to New York Jan 1925, then proceeded immediately to Max, North Dakota to be a farm hand. I'm wondering what sort of historical information you might have for that time period? Do you have any city directories or lists of farmers during that era? The ship my Grandfather was on did have written a person's name in Max, N.D. that he was to have employment - but it is very difficult to read. I do have a 1927 picture of my Grandfather at a hotel in Fargo, N.D. on his way to, but not in Max. [At left]
My Grandfather's name was Charles Frederick Demuth. The name of the person he was to meet for farm employment in Max, N.D. looks like a "John Lenich", but this is a guess.
Many thanks if you have any info or ideas for me to try.

Requester, from Sweeden wants to know if any family members are still living in area? I see in the McLean Co GenWeb pages a John and Kate Rumynson are buried in the Max city Cemetery, and several Rumynson folks homesteaded in Twp150 , R 80, in early 1900s. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks. Vivian

You have a very nice web site. I lived in Max back in 1946-51. My mom did the cooking for the school and my dad was the custodian. We lived in the bottom part of the school in a partitioned off large room next to the gym. By any chance would anyone remember the population of Max during those years. I keep thinking about 400,but for some reason it doesn\'t sound right. Would appreciate any help. Say hi to any Junglings or Schneibles that might be there. Sorry for the spellings. Thank for your time. Dick Anderson

Snowplowing on the Soo line.
My grandfather, Harm Bruins, lived in Minot from about 1906 to the spring of 1909. My uncle told that one winter he was operating an engine plowing snow on the railway and they got badly stuck and about 40 men with shovels dug them out. A few years ago I saw a picture in the cafe in Max with two engines and a snowplow stuck in a drift with a lot of men and shovels standing on the drift. Th e waitress told me her mother-in-law said that was a one-time event. (she kindly loaned me the picture to have copied) Can anyone provide more information about that event?

My dad (William E. "Gene" Gradin) is listed on the Honor Wall as are my uncles Kenny, Stan, Bob (LeRoy), Ray and Jack Borg (aunt Clarice). Being the "unofficial" Gradin family historian I remember seeing the original memorial back in the 1960's when we visited North Dakota. I still have pictures of Louie Walters, his son Bud, and Bud's son Llewelyn (who I believe is also on "the Wall") from when we went to visit my Grandpa's homestead. Thank you people of Max for remembering!!! My dad's family were all born and raised in Benedict and in 1969 I spent the summer in Dakota working for Ted Sieverson over in the Voltaire / Velva area. Several of my cousins and I are planning a trip up there this summer if everything goes as planned. I don't know if Max is ready to be invaded again by a whole slew of Gradins for the first time in over 40 years! I'll probably have to swing up to Harvey to see one of my old friends (Mike & Jan Moore) providing they're still there. I'd be more than happy to hear from anyone that may remember my Dad or any of his family. Again, THANK YOU for remembering the service of our family! Don Gradin

I really enjoyed reading about the origin of the town name. When I was young my father, Howard Freitag, told us about how his home town was named for his brother Max. It was also interesting to see that the town history was told by Ethel Boettcher. When my grandma, Lida Freitag, came to visit us in Washington State she often spoke of her friend Mrs. Boettcher. I'm guessing that Ethel may be the daughter or daughter-in-law of my grandma's friend. I see from the blog that Ethel celebrated her 97th birthday last month. If I've done the math correctly, she is about 5 years younger than my father (who passed away in 1978) so she may have known him growing up. Please wish her a belated birthday greeting from us.
My sisters (Susan Freitag of Vancouver Washington and Sally Weitz of Kittitas Washington) and I still have ties to Max. Some of our Grandpa Paul's farm remains in the family, being farmed by Michael Dobowey.

My father Paul Lee Bonderenko passed away when in 1966. I never knew anything about him and I see that there are several people on the wall with this last name including a Paul Bonderenko. I know that my father did work for the military as some sort of contractor is what I have been told. My mother passed away 3 years ago this Dec. and she had Alzheimers so she was not able to tell us much. I wanted to know if this Paul Bonderenko could be my father and to find out some information about him and possibly his family.
