Max News 7-12-04 There has been a lot of sadness in the Max area this past week, unfortunately. Tim Splichal passed away Sunday in the Garrison Hospital. Tim and Kristin Haynes of Max were married in October, 2003 and lived in Garrison. Tim’s funeral will be Thursday, July 15 at 12:00 noon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garrison. Our sympathy to his bride, Kristin. Early Monday morning, July 5 th., a car fire burned 2 little children and their Mother. Lenyce Brady, granddaughter of Florene and Maurice Knudtson of Douglas, is presently a patient in Trinity Hospital in Minot. Her two little girls, great grandchildren of Florene and Maurice, are in the Burn Center in St. Paul, MN. Kassandra is 10 and Kaylah is 7. I hope to have an address for you next week so you may send these girls cards and gifts. Although, you may find the address in the Douglas News in today’s paper. Florene works at The Wrangler Café in Max and worked before at Grandma’s Kitchen and the Cenex “C” Store in Max, so she is well known and loved. Florene and Maurice need to be remembered too. There is a donation can set up at The Wrangler Café, with the two little girls’ pictures on it. Monday evening, July 5 th there was a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Highways 83 and 53. Rick Letvin was killed and a family of five from Tioga were hospitalized in Minot. Several from Max know this family and in fact, the family was on their way to visit friends in Max. Rick was married to Jody Johnson who graduated from Max High School in 1982. Our sympathy to Jody and the family. On Saturday Mary Lushenko, Annie Rovenko, Lila Fannik and Lois and Phil Kankovsky of Minot drove to Kenmare to attend the funeral of Micah Erickson, 4-month old son of Todd and Kim Erickson. Todd has an important role in the Good News program in Max. Ethel Boettcher’s cousin, Ruby Kline Bambury, passed away July 8 at Penfield, NY. She lived at #63 Matthew Drive, Fairport, NY 14450. Her son, Ronald Bambury and his wife, Laura live in Fairport. Ruby was one of the first babies to be born in Max, born on March 16, 1906. Ruby is the daughter of Fred and Emilia Kline. She graduated from our own high school in 1925 and entered nurses’ training at the Bismarck Hospital. After she graduated and married, she lived and worked in Minneapolis. Her father, Fred, built a house on the corner where the present one-story four-plex is, on Main Street. Visiting with Lorna Sambor and Connie Sambor, of Minneapolis, MN. last Tuesday evening were Myron Sveum and Barbara Keating of Denver, Co. It had been many years since Connie and Myron had seen each other. Visiting with Ethel Boettcher over the 4 th. of July were Tom and Nancy Mulhurn and their son, Connor, 10 years old, from Madison, Wisconsin. Nancy is Ethel’s neice – Ethel’s brother Aaron’s daughter. While here they all enjoyed the Knife River Village. George Huettl stopped by briefly at the Senior Center on Sunday, July 4 th. George came to Max with his son Ron, Korie, and granddaughter Emily from Minot. Also with them was his son Tony and family from Northfield, MN. George is now at Manor Care in Minot and is doing good. It was nice to see you, George. We miss you and hope you will be here with us, real soon. Eleanor Vise of Burlington and Linda Feldner of Minot, along with Lila Fannik of Max enjoyed last Thursday with Margaret Scurlock at her home. The Family Reunion of the Alex and Katarine Honcharoff descendants met on July 6, 2004 in the Max Baptist Church basement. The honored guests from a far distance were Eric and Eleanor Annandale, from Winnipeg, MB, Canada; Crystal and John Priddy and children Grace, Raleigh, Luke and Leo of Roanoke, VA. Other cousins and friends were here from Grand Forks, Killdeer, Dickinson, Minot, Max, and Denver, Co. We had a wonderful afternoon of visiting and reminiscing. We all enjoyed a delicious dinner together. Today, Thursday, July 15 is “Survival: Winter, Sickness, and Injuries” at the Max Library from 2 to 5 P.M. There will be Lewis and Clark trivia and you will be making a compass. Next Thursday, July 22 nd., you will be learning “What They Did For Fun.” Again there will be Lewis and Clark trivia; a snack of Indian Fry Bread; and you will be making an Indian dice game that you can take home. There will be a Pasta Days Committee meeting this coming Monday, July 19 th., at 7:00 P.M. Plans are pretty much in place now for Max’s August 7 th. Pasta Day. There will be a Moon Walk; Car Show with first through third place trophies; a Karate demonstration; Ice cream social; Flea Market on Main Street; Garage sales throughout town; seat driving contest; and of course the free pasta feed from 4 to 6 P.M. that day. The rodeo will be begin at approximately 5:00 and our own DJ, Wayne Kabanuck will be set up by his Wrangler Café at approximately 9:00 P.M. St. Matthew’s Church will be serving lunch of chiliburgers, pie, chips, and a drink at their church. A bake sale, and a silent auction of quilts and other handmade items, will be going on there during this time too. All proceeds will be going towards the refinishing of their church pews. Last Sunday’s benefit for Carmen Day Fedorenko went really well and was well attended. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Carmen. The 50-50 drawing held during June’s Civic Club meeting named Susan Halverson as the winner of $33.50. The 50-50 drawing held Monday night during the July meeting named Dan Haugen as the winner of $37. 50-50 tickets may be purchased at any Max business for $1.00 and will be available for purchase on Pasta Day too. The drawing is held at each month’s Civic Club meeting and you do not need to be present to win. Other business attended to during July’s Civic Club meeting was discussing having the school help with the printing costs of the monthly community calendar. A Civic Club representative will present it at the next school board meeting. The Civic Club Steak Fry will be held October 30 th., instead of its usual time in December. Again the town of Max and surrounding area lost many trees and branches to the ‘big winds’ of North Dakota on Sunday evening. A second tornado within a short time, demolished a second barn in the Douglas area that evening too. “Heroes are people who rise to the occasion and slip quietly away.” Tom Brokaw
