Max News 1-16-06 Word has been received that Vivian Walsh Brodell passed away in Fargo recently. Vivian once lived by Max. DeWitt, Pam, Dwight J, Shaylynn and Casey Mack from Mandan stopped at the Dwight Mack home on Sunday after being at a hockey tournament in Minot. They had supper with Dwight and DeeOn too. The Max Senior Citizen's Dinner on Sunday was a huge success with 41 attending and 3 having their meals delivered to them in their homes. Tenley and Wayne Johnson played their guitars and sang while we enjoyed our meal of ham and turkey, prepared and served by the Linda and Duwayne Haynes family. The Johnsons accompanied the guests while they all sang Christmas Carols. Lydia Pettys then played the piano while we sang. Max Stolt had everyone laughing to his readings and jokes. Thank you everyone! Following all this fun, there was more fun with playing Bingo called out by Duwayne Haynes. The Seniors provided many prizes for the winners. Some men proceeded on to play pool while many of us continued to play Bingo. The Senior Center has five new members now and hoping more will join in the near future. Five members came from Minot; 2 from Garrison, and 2 from Underwood. Everyone from far and near would agree that a 'fun time was had by all!' Their next meeting is February 10th. with a noon potluck. They would like anyone who has patterns for wood cutouts to bring them to this meeting. Especially patterns for birdhouses and garden plant markers as several will be making these items to sell this spring while Giffey's have their plants there. Hopefully a very good way to raise money for the Max Senior Center and to 'raise' your garden produce! Monday evening's Centennial meeting was very well attended with 28 attending. The promotions committee reported there are fewer than 24 full-color afghans left and they do not expect to be ordering more so if you are still wanting a full-color afghan, place your order now. It was reported that Wanda Lindquist Huettl has finished compiling information on all the country schools in the area; on the Observation Tower that once stood in Max; and on Boeing that was located in Max. Thank you Wanda! The History Book committee needs information on former businesses that once graced Max's Main Street and side streets. If you have any information and/or pictures, please contact Edwin Schmidt. Reminder: February first is the deadline for histories of businesses and families and 100 year farms. Typist are needed now to type out these histories and 8 to 10 people will be needed the end of February to proof-read everything before it goes into the History book. A letter will be going out soon to ask for participants in the Sunday afternoon program on Main Street. They would like to have each church represented plus anyothers that would like to sing, do readings, give history, etc. The Alumni Association will be sending out a second letter soon with prices pertaining to all of the Centennial events, books, meals, etc. Margaret Johnson Scurlock of Max has written a play that will be performed on stage at the High School each afternoon of the week-end. It is of stories about Max and is very good! Thank you Margaret! Margaret, Lila Fannik, and Lorna Sambor are all sisters raised in the Douglas area. The Alumni Banquet on Friday evening will be catered by the Homesteader's Restaurant of Minot. Kyle's Katering of Garrison will cater the Saturday evening public meal and Kyle will again provide lunch following all local church services, but prior to the service on Main Street. Banners to attach to the poles on Main Street and around town were discussed. You may be able to have your family name or business added to the bottom of the banner as "Sponsored By". Contact Edwin Schmidt regarding details on this. The Max School classes, clubs, and 4-H Clubs are going to be asked to do clean-up in the town during the big week-end. The next Centennial Meeting will be on Sunday, February 19th., at 1:30 so not to conflict with local sports. The Alumni Meeting will also be held that day. "Use what talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best." Henry Van Dyke
